It's All About Empathy
Forum theatre in diversity and grievance resolution
- The Client
- A regional police authority
- The Need
- As part of ongoing development in diversity, create a forum in which the issues of diversity and informal grievance resolution can be raised and discussed, and preconceptions challenged.
- The Solution
- Develop a piece of unscripted forum theatre in which a WPC feels harassed and bullied by a male colleague. Present three characters played by actors - the WPC, her male colleague and their line manager - to the delegates, and allow them to 'direct'. Delegates are encouraged by the facilitator to test new ideas.
- The Outcome
- A fresh and exciting workshop in which delegates are involved and proactive in the group development of ideas. They see how the different approaches to such an issue can have vastly differing results.
- The Benefit
- The process of sharing ideas and debating issues openly and honestly helps promote a culture within the organisation based on greater trust and communication, ultimately empowering employees to take control of their own grievance issues at an informal level and thus reducing the number of official hearings and costly tribunals.
