New Learning Initiative Develops Leaders - Not Just Managers

CentreStage has teamed up with Reading-based learning consultancy, Headline Training, to launch a new leadership development initiative. The initiative will equip managers with the necessary leadership qualities to deal with today’s fast-changing world.

Interactive Learning

'Develop Yourself as a Business Leader' is a series of workshops that raise self-awareness, challenge preconceptions and harness the power and creativity of working and networking with peers. This open, interactive style of learning will help participants pursue and achieve objectives more effectively through a better understanding of what motivates their own behaviour, thereby understanding what motivates others.

The workshops will also encourage learners to think creatively, share ideas and experiences and be open to new ideas and insights. What’s more, delegates will be able to test the skills they learn through forum theatre style sessions.

The Scarcity of Leadership

The courses are in response to a raft of recent research, which has found that organisations are finding it increasingly difficult to find managers with appropriate leadership skills. The research, by Investors in people U.K., the Department of Trade and Industry, and the Institute of Leadership and Management, points to a need for companies to develop home-grown leadership talent rather than rely on recruiting leaders from an increasingly scarce high-calibre management market.

“Being a manager and being a leader are two very different things”, says Tim Brewer, of Headline Training. “In today’s exciting but volatile economy the old ways of management no longer work. You cannot address these new challenges with more of the same management solutions.”

“The fact is leadership risk creates opportunities while management strictness turns them into tangible results. You need managers and leaders to achieve effective company growth, therefore, but successful change is dependent on good leadership. Unfortunately the world is full of managers and desperately short of real leaders.”

Progressive Development

The series of four one-day progressive interactive workshops will run between 24th February and 24th May. The four modules are:

  • Introduction to Leadership
  • Personal Impact and self-management
  • Inspiring and developing others
  • Leading the Organisation

Tim Brewer says, “Although we will run these workshops as stand alone events, most benefit will be derived from attending all four along with like-minded peers from other organisations. This will expose participants to the challenges of leadership roles and the competencies required at individual, interpersonal and group level to succeed as a leader.”

As well as these workshops, Headline provides one-to-one business coaching, which as a key leadership quality addresses management issues, communication skills and relationship issues. Headline’s development solutions are ideal for anyone in an existing or aspiring leadership role wishing to explore and embrace best practice.

£1000 Subsidies Available

To help fund leadership development, Managing Directors and senior managers of businesses with 20-249 employees can access up to £1,000 for their personal development.

A grant is available through Business Link and aims to help senior staff with their own development needs. The money may be spent towards personal coaching, training, books, qualifications and any other self-improvement tools they need to inspire their staff and grow their business.

The funding comes in response to recent research that showed how critical the skills, capabilities and vision of senior managers are, to a company's future success. The Department of Further Education and Skills (DFES) has made available £4.4m throughout the South East.
